Curriculum - Learning Lens
Welcome to the Marlborough Public Schools Curriculum Learning Lens Web page. Our goal is to make this page useful (1) to teachers and staff in continually reviewing, revising and refining our curriculum across grade levels and content areas, and (2) to families and the entire community in becoming more informed about the district’s priorities for our students’ educational experiences.
On November 19, 2012, the Office of Teaching and Learning hosted a grades PreK-8 Curriculum Roll Out Family Event at which district educators shared the curriculum development process and progress with parents of students grades PreK-8.To see the evenings presentation, click here.
Parents who attended the event were provided copies of the National PTA Parent Guides to Student Success. These documents break down the Common Core into very accessible language, and they are useful tools for parents who want a good shapshot of students expecations and learning. These guides, posted in both English and Spanish and specific to each grade K-8, can be found at http://www.pta.org/content.cfm?ItemNumber=2796.

Below you will find an overview of our district’s pK-12 curriculum, or “Learning Lens” – a shared set of learning expectations for what students should understand, know and be able to do at each grade level and content area, aligned to state and the new national Common Core standards. The documents are presented as a set of prioritized standards, with supporting information about key understandings that underlie the goals of the standards and the associated concepts and skills (including 21st Century skills) that students will need to acquire in order to achieve the standards.
Our world is constantly changing and workplace demands are ever increasing; educators must regularly adjust to ensure that our students enter the 21st Century future prepared to pursue meaningful college and career opportunities. Likewise, curriculum must be fluid in order to reflect those changes.
For this reason, these documents always will be considered “drafts” and will change over the course of time as teachers and staff continue our ongoing districtwide curriculum alignment process. Additionally, some high school courses, electives or AP courses were omitted because curriculum in grades 9-12 is based on individual courses and electives, which are currently under review. Presented here are our foundational learning expectations in all content areas, which span a minimum of grades pK-8.
This “public draft” of our pK-12 curriculum framework represents an important milestone for the Marlborough Public Schools. We would like to thank all of the teachers, specialists and administrators who were involved in developing and supporting the formation of this monumental initiative.
